9-year-old Hope Mills boy wins accolades for community service

Domonique McGeachy calls her 9-year-old son, Jerel, “an old soul." “He has me listening to the Beatles now,” she said. “Before that, it was B.B. King.” Jerel’s precociousness has not gone unnoticed in the community.

The Rockfish Elementary School fourth-grader drew attention locally for his recitation of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I’ve been to the mountaintop” speech, which he delivered at Hope Mills Town Hall and at area churches. Jerel not only recited the words, but brought to life King’s dramatic delivery of the speech, which the civil rights leader gave not long before he was assassinated in 1968.

Recently, Jerel was named Knight of the Year by local and regional chapters of the Knights of Pythagoras, a service and leadership group. [Published in Fayetteville Observer Nov. 9, 2020]

Jerel is a member of East Freedom Council 33 and his Advisor is Brother Freddie Robertson.

On behalf of the North Carolina Knights of Pythagoras, we are proud of Knight Jerel McGeachy, Jr. He is a rising star the NCKOP program.
